Overview

Six Flags Great Adventure (“Six Flags”) Wild Safari is one of the largest drive-through safaris in North America and a truly unique attraction for the region. Until recently, the park relied heavily on propane, using approximately 90,000 gallons annually to heat 12 large animal barns that house elephants, rhinos, giraffes, gazelles and more.

For nearly two decades, Six Flags explored the possibility of converting to natural gas, but a cost-effective solution remained out of reach — until a new opportunity emerged with New Jesey Natural Gas (NJNG).

Challenge

Despite a clear need for a more efficient and affordable energy source, Six Flags faced a major hurdle to a cost-effective path for converting its expansive safari park to natural gas. The existing propane system was expensive and logistically demanding; and without a viable alternative, the park had no choice but to continue using it.

The turning point came with the construction of new safari spa tents, which increased the park’s total energy demand and justified full natural gas conversion. The challenge for both NJNG and Six Flags was to design and implement a solution that could meet the park’s unique operational needs — quickly, efficiently and without disrupting animal care and guest experiences.

Solution

NJNG engineered and delivered a full-service, comprehensive solution, from initial inquiry to completion, in just three months — an impressive timeline for a project of this scale.

We installed approximately 1.5 miles of new natural gas main lines throughout the safari grounds. The conversion to natural gas began with the animal barns and continued with the integration of the new spa tent facilities as they were completed. The result was a seamless transition from propane to natural gas with a solution tailored to the park’s unique layout and operational requirements.

The full installation to natural gas was completed at no cost* to Six Flags, delivering immediate and long-term benefits. For the first time, the safari is operating profitably without additional subsidies.
This successful project has laid the groundwork for future energy upgrades across the park, including additional conversions from oil and propane. With a focus on sustainability and cost-effectiveness, NJNG is proud to support one of New Jersey’s most iconic attractions — ensuring a better experience for both visitors and the animals that call the safari home.
